In the 1950s, she worked with Toronto’s Joint Labour Committee on Human Rights to fight reluctance of restaurant owners in Dresden, Ontario to serve Black customers. She has published over a dozen editions of a guide book for foreigners visiting China, and published a booklet helping people respect transgender people (Hijras) in India. She has serve as a volunteer at workcamps in Mexico, Japan, and the Canadian Arctic.
