Asian Canadian Wiki in collaboration with the Simone de Beauvoir Institute presents

Ginger Garden is an intimate public potluck gathering to eat, drink, meet and discuss around informal presentations of arts, education, and community-based projects in an open space conducive to sharing and exchanging information and ideas. Presenters who identify themselves as Asian / mixed-race will present their most recent work / project in 5-8 minutes followed by a Q & A period of 5-8 minutes pending the number pf presenters. The event includes open time for public announcements, spontaneous presenters, and discussion. "Asian", in this context, includes people of mixed race whose ancestry is rooted in any Asian country. All are welcome!
Ginger Garden facilitates serendipitous discoveries and cross-disciplinary connections that may capture the power of creativity and the imagination. Ginger Garden est un rassemblement "potluck" intime et publique qui se veut un espace ouvert, propice au partage et à l'échange de l'information et des idées, pour boire, manger, réseauter et discuter autour d'une série de présentations informelles de projets artistiques, éducatifs, académiques et communautaires. Les invités, s'indentifiant tous comme étant asiatiques ou métissés, présenteront leur travail / oeuvre / projet dans 5-8 minutes, suivi d'une période de questions de 5-8 minutes dépendant le nombre des invités. Il y aura également du temps alloué à la discussion, aux annonces, et aux présentations spontanées. "Asiatique" comprend dans ce contexte toute personne métissée dont les origines se trouvent dans un pays d'Asie. Tous sont bienvenus.

Ginger Garden facilite la découverte et les connexions interdisciplinaires et se puise du pouvoir de la créativité et de l'imagination collective. ==Milton Tanaka==
Moderateur/facilitateur
Milton Tanaka a reçu une formation théâtrale au Brésil (EAD-Escola de Arte
Dramática de São Paulo) et de danse contemporaine japonaise Butoh au Japon
avec Kazuo Ohno, à Yokohama. Au Canada,  Milton a acquis un MBA des HEC de
Montréal et travaille comme consultant Lean-Kaizen au Canada, au Brésil et
au Mexique. Il parle cinq langues : japonais, français, anglais, portugais
du Brésil et l'espagnol.

Moderator/Facilitator 
Milton Tanaka received theatrical training in Brazil (EAD-Escola de Arte
Dramática de São Paulo) and Japanese contemporary dance Butoh in Japan with
Kazuo Ohno in Yokohama. In Canada, Milton got an MBA from Montreal HEC and
works as a Lean-Kaizen consultant in Canada, Brazil and Mexico. He speaks
five languages: Japanese, French, English, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish.

==Ziwei Liu (Katie)==

Ziwei Liu (Katie) is president of the Association of Guangxi Origins in Canada, Montreal. Guangxi is one of the 5 Minority Autonomous Regions  in China, located in the South-western part, neighbor to Vietnam.  Katie holds a B.A. and a M.A. degrees in English Language and Literature from Guangxi University and Shanghai Normal University. Katie has been a professional interpreter and translator for many years in education, industry and business, etc. and she has more than 20 years of experience in multi-culture communications. Especially recently, she devotes herself to introducing the traditions and cultures of the different minorities (autochtone) of Guangxi to the western countries, especially to Canada, in Montreal.

==Evelyn Mondonedo Calugay==

Evelyn originally came from the Philippines. She migrated to Canada in 1975. She got reunited with her immediate family members 9 months later.
She worked as a registered nurse since her arrival in Quebec, till she took her retirement in 2005. Has been a part-time volunteer organizer at PINAY (Filipino Women’s Organization in Quebec) since 1995. Since her retirement, she has been volunteering her time as a full time PINAY's organizer up to the present.

==Masoud Raouf==

MASOUD RAOUF, PRODUCER / DIRECTOR / ANIMATOR 
Originally from Iran where he studied painting, Masoud Raouf has lived in Canada since 1988. After studying in the animation program at Ontario's Sheridan College, he produced and directed a number of animated shorts and public service announcements. He has also taught the art of animation in a number of institutions like Concordia University and Canada College. 
In 2002, he directed a film for the National Film Board of Canada, the documentary The Tree that Remembers, in which he tries to understand what led to the suicide of an Iranian student who was living in Canada as a refugee. The film won the Silver Award for Best Canadian Documentary at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto, the Golden Sheaf Award for Best Social Documentary at Yorkton and the Bronze Plaque at the Columbus International Film and Video Festival. 
In 2003, he completed Blue Like a Gunshot. This film won the 2004 Jutra for the best short animation in Quebec, as well as winning best animation prizes at the Moondance and Vermont International Film Festivals in the same year. It has also been screened in the opening nights of several major film festivals including the Montreal World Film Festival and Toronto's Worldwide Short Film Festival. 
In 2005 he produced and directed Waves at Birth, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir6FNdoRQy0). The film won an award for the best short animation at the Vermont International Film Festival (2007) and was screened in the opening night of whitehead International Film festival (2007) 
He completed 30 minutes documentary/Animation “There is garden in 2014.

==Atif Siddiqi==

Born in Pakistan, Atif Siddiqi studied fashion design in Los Angeles and video
production/performance in Montreal where he lives currently. His most recent
works revolve around identity issues, gender politics and notions of personal
transformation and metamorphosis by incorporating elements of symbolism and
iconography from mythology.
His artistic body of work includes the long form experimental documentary Solo,
M! Mom, Madonna and Me, Amethyst’s Universe, Alienation, Erotic, Exotic,
Tranietronic, Firefly, and various short form videos and performances.

==Kyra Shaughnessy==

Raised with a deep respect and connection to the land, with roots criss-crossing from India to Trinidad to Ireland, Kyra’s identity as an artist is nourished by an uncommon wisdom and diversity of experience. Her music artfully combines elements of “political folk” and sacred songs to captivate audiences of all walks of life. In the words of poet Brandon Wint, Kyra’s work “compels us to conscious, critical reflection and the personal and social action that will help us heal one another and the natural elements that comprise and surround us.”

Kyra Shaughnessy a “ce don de créer des ambiances de sérénité et de douceur”. Sa musique et ses textes, bondées d'une poésie simple, nous transportent vers des grandes espaces et des horizons sans fin qui nous donnent l'impression que “tout est possible”. Grandit en Estrie, avec des racines qui traversent de l&#39;Irlande jusqu'en Inde, Kyra se produit sur scène à travers le Canada et en Europe depuis plus d'une dizaine d’années. Diplômée du renommée École nationale de la chanson en 2014, en mai 2016 elle a sorti son quatrième album, Passage, co-réalisé avec Dany Placard. Vous l'aurez peut-être vu défendre les œuvres de ce dernier au Festival Village en Chanson de Petite-Vallée, au demi-finales du Festival Internationale de la Chanson de Granby, à l'émission TEMPO ! De MaTV, ou à bien d'autres endroits ! Avec des nuances de Joan Baez, de Caracol et de Buffy Sainte-Marie, Kyra nous livre un folk-roots savamment métissée où guitare,violoncelle, kora, et batterie font bon ménage.

==Jessica Chen==

Jessica Chen is a Canadian urban planner currently based in Montréal, Quebec. Her city planning work generally focuses on developing urban policies and strategies that encourage pluralistic understanding of the cities and engage the diverse city builders in defining a collective vision. Jessica is the founder of Wabi Sabi Planning Laboratories, a consulting practice that she started in 2012, after a 12-year planning career at the City of Vancouver (COV). Most of her work with the COV focused on the regeneration of historic inner city neighbourhoods commonly known as the Downtown Eastside, including Gastown and Chinatown. Her work through Wabi Sabi Planning Laboratories often explores issues relating to cultural identity and its role as an asset in shaping urban landscape and city economy. Jessica holds a Master Degree in City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania and started her planning career in Philadelphia prior to working with the COV. After fifteen years of calling Vancouver home as an immigrant from Taiwan, she relocated to Montreal in 2013. Currently other than urban planning, she is also working on improving her French, finishing her various creative writing projects, a long-term passion of hers, and taking care of her seven-year-old son.

Jessica Chen est une urbaniste canadienne qui habite à Montréal, Québec. Sa pratique d’urbanisme se concentre généralement sur le développement de politiques et de stratégies urbaines qui promeuvent la compréhension pluraliste des villes et engagent les divers bâtisseurs de villes vers
une vision collective. Jessica est la fondatrice de Wabi Sabi Planning Laboratories, une entreprise de consultation, qu’elle a établi en 2012 après une carrière d’urbanisme de 12 ans à la ville de Vancouver (COV). La plupart de son porte-folio avec la COV s’est concentré sur la régénération des quartiers historiques du centre-ville, communément appelé le “Downtown Eastside”, à l’intérieur duquel est inclus Gastown et le quartier chinois. Ses projets à travers Wabi Sabi Planning Laboratories explorent souvent les questions liées à l’identité culturelle et son rôle d’atout pour façonner le paysage urbain et l’économie de la ville. Jessica détient une maîtrise en urbanisme de l’University of Pennsylvania et a commencé sa carrière d’urbanisme à Philadelphie avant de travailler avec la COV. Originaire de Taiwan, elle a vécu pendant 15 ans à Vancouver, qu’elle a d’ailleurs considéré comme sa ville d’adoption, avant de déménager, en 2013, à Montréal. Présentement, mise à part l’urbanisme, elle travaille également à améliorer son français, à finir ses projets créatifs d’écriture, une passion de longue date, et s’occupe de son fils de sept ans.

==Reena Almoneda-Chang==

Reena Almoneda-Chang is a Montreal-based dancer, choreographer, and movement educator of Chinese and Filipino descent from Vancouver, British Columbia. In 1989 she moved to Montreal to complete a B.A. in Political Science after which she went on to undertake studies in body-based psychotherapy, Chinese massage/bodywork, and dance. In dance and movement she focused primarily on African and afro-contemporary dance, flamenco, yoga, and tai chi. In 1996 she became a member of the Cie Danse Nyata Nyata which began a period of concentration on African dance. From 1997-1999 she traveled to Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana to pursue further training in African dances after which she began to perform with various African music groups in Montreal, Quebec, and Rwanda. In 2004 she completed a Master’s in Dance at UQAM, and since then has focused on teaching and performing African dance, her own style of fusion-based afro-contemporary dance, and creative process. For over 10 years she has also been involved in the development and facilitation of community art projects centered on the body, movement, dance, and artistic process as a way of cultivating personal, social and political awareness and transformation. She has worked with immigrant women, marginalized women and youth, women in prison, and with families at-risk with young children. Currently, she is working on Sanctuary, an inter-disciplinary art project (dance, theatre, visual art, and video) in collaboration with the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal, while completing training as a dance movement therapist with the National Centre for Dance Therapy at Les Grands Ballets Canadiens.


Reena Almoneda Chang est danseuse, chorégraphe et éducatrice en mouvement d’origine sino-philippine basé à Montréal. Ex-membre de la Cie de Danse Nyata Nyata, elle a entreprit plusieurs voyages en Afrique (Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire et Ghana) pour approfondir sa connaissance des danses africaines. Ensuite, elle s’est produite en spectacle avec plusieurs groupes de musique africaine à Montréal, à Québec, en Ontario et au Rwanda, se présentant dans les festivals Vues d’Afrique, Nuits d’Afrique, Francofollies, les Maisons de la Culture et au Festival d’Été au Québec. Détenue d’une maîtrise en danse de l’Université du Québec à Montréal, elle a développé son propre style de fusion contemporaine basé sur le mélange de plusieurs formes de danse tels que la danse africaine, le flamenco, le tai chi et le capoeira. Dans ses créations elle s’intéresse aux thèmes de conflits interculturels et socio-politique, l’identité et la déconstruction des stéréotypes culturels. Depuis dix ans elle s’engage dans des projets d’art communautaire, travaillant avec des femmes immigrantes et en difficulté, des femmes incarcérées, des jeunes et des familles marginalisées avec des enfants 0-5 ans. Présentement, elle fait de la collaboration artistique dans le projet Sanctuaire, un projet de co-création interdisciplinaire (danse, art visuel, théâtre et vidéo) avec le Foyer pour femmes autochtones de Montréal, pendant qu’elle complète une formation en danse-thérapie avec le Centre de danse-thérapie aux Grands Ballets Canadiens. Sa vision artistique est également informée par des études en sciences politiques (BA de McGill), en psychothérapie corporelle et en massage chinois traditionnel.

==Chittakone Baccam Thirakul==

Né en Thaïlande, d'origine laotienne et Thaï-dam, Chittakone Baccam est un artiste musical. Actif depuis 2008 sur la scène de la musique expérimentale, il est constamment à la recherche de nouveaux sons. Il co-fonde l'étiquette Jeunesse Cosmique en 2010 dont il est aujourd'hui le directeur artistique. Il se consacre à Hazy Montagne Mystique à partir de 2012, projet qui se veut une vision sonore de ce qui se passe quand il ferme les yeux. Le passé de sa culture laotienne imprègne sa musique. Artiste très actif, il a fait plusieurs prestations et performances, collaboré avec de nombreux artistes issus de l'expérimental montréalais et d'ailleurs.

Chittakone Baccam Thirakul is a sound artist born in Thailand of Laotian and Taï Dam origin. His Laotian background infuses his music. Thirakul has been working in the experimental music scene since 2008 and is constantly exploring new sounds. In 2010, he co-founded the label, Jeunesse Cosmique, and is currently its artistic director. In 2012, Baccam began Hazy Montagne Mystique, a sound image project exploring what occurs when we closes our eyes. A very active artist, he has extensively performed in shows and festivals, and collaborated with numerous artists in the underground scene in Montreal and outside.

==Florent Cachot==

Né en Corée du Sud, élevé en France et actuellement basé sur Montréal. Florent Cachot est un artiste et enseignant dans le monde des arts digitaux de Montréal. Depuis son plus jeune age, il n a jamais cessé d'explorer sa propre identité. Présentement, il crée sa propre vie à l'intérieur d'un nouveau contexte il explore différentes variables de ce que c'est d être humain. Un espace ou l'on peut générer de l'inspiration dans un monde face à sa propre résignation. Vivre dans un monde de possibilités au-delà des jugements, étiquette ou autres attentes sociales. Ou être un artiste est un expression de pure création et non de contraintes.

Korean-born, raised in France and currently based in Montreal. Florent Cachot is an artist and teacher in the world of the digital art in Montreal. Since his young age he never stops exploring his own identity. Nowadays, he tries to make his own life as a living project inside a powerful shape-shifting phenomenological context where he is exploring what does it mean to become a human being. The kind of space where we can generate a space of love and inspiration in a world of resignation. Living in a world of possibilites beyond judgments,labels, or other social expectations.

==Florence Yee==

Florence Yee is a 2.5 generation, Cantonese-struggling visual artist based in Montreal and Ottawa, unceded territory of Mohawk and Algonquin peoples respectively. While completing her BFA at Concordia University, she works with community groups for visual culture, such as Atelier Celadon, EAHR (Ethnocultural Art Histories Research) and HERE (Healing Each-other Radically Everyday). Her interest in Asian-Canadian history has fueled an art practice committed to dismantling institutional and casual ideals of Eurocentric patriarchy, as well as examining the daily life of her diaspora. Yee collaborates with other women and femmes of colour to prioritize our voices and mental health. She is represented by Studio Sixty-Six, and independently exhibits her work internationally.

==Farah Fancy==

Farah Fancy is an arts manager, artist, community worker and consultant who for over 20 years has been using an ethnographic process to create socially engaged dance, music, and theatre performances. As a result she founded Le groupe herencias with a mission to promote, educate and collaborate with the artists and community she works with to find new ways to explore our heritage and identity across gender, religion, class, generation and culture. For example, she is the General Manager of choreographer Julio Hong, who fuses contemporary, ballet and folkloric forms to explore identity; Rencontres/Encounters theatre ensemble a socially engaged project that uses relationship building to overcome difference; Rumbakwa, an afro latin electro band that is inspired by refugee experiences in Quebec; and the conception designer for Elders Makes Waves movement with RECAA ( Respecting Elders, Communities Against Abuse). Farah also works with a number of organizations and institutions to consult on how to art can be used as a tool to resolve structural problems within organizations, foster economic development, and facilitate cultural understanding.

En conséquence, elle a fondé Le groupe herencias dans le but de promouvoir, d'éduquer et de collaborer avec les artistes et la communauté avec lesquels elle travaille pour trouver de nouvelles façons d'explorer notre patrimoine et notre identité sur le genre, la religion, la classe, la génération et la culture. Par exemple, elle est la directrice générale du chorégraphe Julio Hong, qui fusionne les formes contemporaines, de ballet et folkloriques pour explorer l'identité; Rencontres / Encounters  ensemble de théâtre un projet socialement engagé qui utilise le bâtiment relationnel pour surmonter la différence; Rumbakwa, une orchestre afro latin inspirée des expériences de réfugiés au Québec; Et le concepteur de concepteur pour le mouvement Elders Makes Waves avec RECAA (Respecting Elders, Communities Against Abuse).
