She was born in India and trained in medicine at the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chhatrapati_Shahuji_Maharaj_Medical_University King George Medical College] in [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucknow Lucknow] and the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Berkshire_Hospital Royal Berkshire Hospital] in the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom UK].  She became a Canadian citizen in 1974.
