He served in the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_House_of_Commons Canadian House of Commons] from 1997 to 2008, representing the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberta Alberta] riding of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmonton—Strathcona Edmonton—Strathcona] as a member of the Conservative Party. He was the first Muslim elected to the Canadian Parliament.
