==Himmat Shinhat== | |||
{{#widget:YouTube|id=iDNlwX8RZ_0}}
When Himmat Shinhat, BComm 80, moved to Canada from England in the late 1970s, he felt a sense of disappointment. Montreal, in his experience as a member of a visible minority, was years behind England regarding multiculturalism and integration. Eventually Shinhat found his way to a place where things seemed different — Concordia. There, Shinhat found a “network of South Asian friends” and a “very progressive” student body and faculty that gave him the sense of be- longing he longed for. “There was a lot more attention paid to being inclusive with respect to racial and class diversity,” he says. The university was also a hotbed of progressive politics, which resonated with him.After graduating, Shinhat began working with a South Asian advocacy organization. Quickly rising through the ranks, within four years he was named the organization’s executive director. In the 1980s, he was recruited by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (now Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada).After a long career with Immigration and Citizenship Canada, in 2016 Himmat Shinhat began working with Syrian refugees as director of outreach for the Syrian Refugee Resettlement Initiative in Ottawa, his last stop before retiring in 2017.

The work that I have been called to weaves together the seemingly disparate aspects of Being and guides one to a vision of his or her own wholeness and perfection…I simply love someone for Who (S)He Is, and ease that person to a place of wonderment and gratitude for the Life that (s)he has created…WHATEVER that Life may be. Together, we open an attitude of joyful responsibility and active serenity… I watch with awe as one by one we step into our destiny and heal our pools of influence through Love…
Born in Trinidad and raised in Canada, I traveled extensively to study and trained in many of the world’s spiritual traditions (Cree, Anishnabe, Miq’ma, Judaic, mystical Christian, Mayan, Hindu, Taoist, Tibetan Budddhist, Zen Buddhist…) I’ve practiced and taught oriental and traditional medicine for a few decades and raised and home-schooled my 4 amazing children. I’ve been called teacher, guide, mother, healer, witch, midwife, shaman and troublemaker….
My understanding is that my work is to help dissolve the imprints of the past on the material manifestation of the Earth, and in so doing, to assist our transition through to our new planetary reality. To this end, I have been called to do healing + releasing in different countries that held bloodshed and violence in their energetic fields. The experience for me is of touching with love the ancestors who were caught in vibrations of fear and anger, releasing them and thus freeing the bloodlines that flowed from them in a weakened state through generations. Working with the ancestral lineages of the land, the work helps to release any impediments still in the way of this great shift that our planet is undertaking, perhaps alleviating some of the potential earth changes that are still possibilities. I am often sent to act as a doula/midwife for all forms of physical manifestation, assisting transition through/between dimensions.
Our bodies are physical manifestations of the planet as well, created of the earth and our beliefs and intentions. During sessions, I often have the honour of connecting and communicating with spirit representatives of the lineage of lives and bodies that have combined to create the individual who I am touching and to feel something like a collective sigh of relief as the ancestors are freed of programmes of limitation and separation.
My Tibetan Buddhist name is Nawang Yangchen, translated as “possessor of healing voice”; I use my voice in healing sessions and teaching, in group meditations and visualisations and to create rituals to celebrate life transitions.I work with individuals, couples, children and families in consultation and using an approach based in the indigenous Medicine Wheel of the Americas, the 5 elements of oriental medicine and a deep appreciation of the role of each individual in laying a foundation for the Future Earth.

Himmat Shinhat[edit]
{{#widget:YouTube|id=iDNlwX8RZ_0}}

My Tibetan Buddhist name is Nawang Yangchen, translated as “possessor of healing voice”; I use my voice in healing sessions and teaching, in group meditations and visualisations and to create rituals to celebrate life transitions.I work with individuals, couples, children and families in consultation and using an approach based in the indigenous Medicine Wheel of the Americas, the 5 elements of oriental medicine and a deep appreciation of the role of each individual in laying a foundation for the Future Earth. http://www.heartroot.com http://dawnbramadat.wordpress.com/

SHERWIN TJIA[edit]
SHERWIN TJIA is the author of 9 books. His collection of 1300 pseudohaikus, The World is a Heartbreaker, was a finalist for the Quebec Writers Federations's A.M. Klein Award. His graphic novel, The Hipless Boy, was a finalist for the Doug Wright Award and nominated for 4 Ignatz Awards. His latest book is the last of a trilogy of Choose Your Own Adventure style books from the POV of a cat, entitled You Are a Kitten!. In addition to his writing, he is also a multidisciplinary artist whose practise blurs the boundaries between performer and audience. Incorporating elements of childhood and nostalgia, Tjia's events create contexts that welcome participants to open and unsettle themselves, often in acts of radical intimacy or unexpected collaboration. He gently seduces participants into regressing and revealing themselves under the auspices of “having a good time”. He has toured these works nationally and internationally.
An Li, Vo Thien Viet, and Emily Yee Clare[edit]
Through strikes and rants, we have struggled together to digest and understand our identities. Always complicated, always confusing, we want to investigate who we are, and memory and its place within our communities. Although, we come from different places and perspectives, our narratives have woven together through love, activism, and friendship.
Intimacies bring us together, strengthen our will, and empower us to fight for our communities and our politics. We want to highlight the two sides of this: the internal care and love and the outward cry for justice. We are looking to recreate images of everyday community members to capture individual moments of solidarity, compassion and love throughout time.
Three humans. Who made art. Once upon a time. Out of love for their communities, and rage for those who fuck with us.
Description: Distant Intimacies is an evolving project centering racialised representation. Our presentation will discuss the challenge.

De par les enseignements de Mme Kayo Yasuhara, les danseurs apprennent des danses qui se transmettent depuis des siècles. Wai-Yin has always worked in arts, culture, film and broadcasting since she graduated in Communications in Hong Kong and pursued French studies in France. Working as an Interpreter at the Health and Social Services of Montreal and teaching Chinese-Canadian Cantonese, she has accumulated a lot of thoughts and stories to share, this is how the idea of hosting a podcast emerged. Born to be socially engaged, even in art, she innately chose flamenco dance to express all kinds of human oppression. www.waiyinkwok.net
Through the podcast, we'd like that the different realities and experiences of the Chinese community be heard. Reducing cultural misunderstandings and advocating for mutual comprehension and tolerance, firstly in Quebec, then extended to other societies/ countries, became my mandate since I started working at the social services with the Chinese community.

Margaret Elizabeth Nielsen[edit]
{{#widget:YouTube|id=-x32VfMkpwI}}
Born in Ellwangen, Germany, lives in Montréal, Canada.Photography as a mean of communication fascinated her since early adulthood.
Influenced by classic photojournalism, she started to explore photography as an autodidact from scratch, working for years only in black and white. This allowed her to develop an experience in darkroom techniques as well as analog photography.
After having worked as a freelance photographer and assistant for many years, she started her career as a photo editor and account manager in a German photo agency. Various travels brought her to Asia and a sabbatical allowed her an extended stay in Afghanistan, where she could teach women basic photography. Her work about China has been exhibited with the support of the Goethe-Institut in Germany.
Her recent projects involve darkroom techniques as well as the reuse of found material. Her current project 'A Nepalese Photo Studio' is comprised of a selection of 'found photography' that she acquired from a family-run photo studio in Nepal. The images were taken by 2 photographers, father and son, who specialized in portraiture, street scenes, events and snippets from daily life. The material dates from the late 40s till the end of the 90s and provides insight into daily life and the history of a small Newari town and its inhabitants. The exhibition will be presented by Festival Accès Asie (www.accesasie.com) from April 27 to June 04, 2016 at La Maison de la Culture Frontenac, Montréal. www.margretnielsen.wordpress.com

Kiran Ambwani[edit]
Passionate about people, their lifestyle, and the arts, Kiran Ambwani is a professional photographer of Indian origin, now based in Montreal. Kiran's creative vision captivates the editorial and advertising worlds, with a versatile portfolio ranging from portraits to products, lifestyle to landscapes and architecture to abstract images. Kiran freelances for various publications, advertising and press agencies, and non-profit groups. Specializing in portraiture and editorial photography, Kiran's photographs have been published in Vogue, Geo Plein Air, MindFood (Australia), Travesias (Mexico), US Airways, IB World (UK), Le Devoir, Journal Alternatives, Metro, Mirror, and The Bombay Times (India). Kiran's images reflect a sensitivity shaped by her background in anthropology and environmental science and her numerous travels. Driven by a curiosity for the problematics encountered by marginalised populations, Kiran has explored, among others, the lives of Tibetan monks in exile, the survivors of child trafficking in Mumbai, the inhabitants of Asia's largest slum Dharavi, and the indigenous women of Nepal. She has collaborated on several humanitarian projects with NGOs in Canada, India, and Nepal. Apart from commercial work, Kiran has held several group and solo exhibitions of her personal work in Canada and abroad. Kiran is a graduate of McGill University and the Dawson Institute of Photography in Montreal.
Kiran is currently working on 'Objets Cheris'. A public art project, it aims at bringing art and life to the otherwise dull and impersonal walls of the oncology departments in Montreal's wellness facilities. Initiated at Montreal's Notre-Dame Hospital, this installation seeks to inspire people by showcasing patients who have found the inner strength to face the challenges of the disease by engaging in various hobbies and activities. Art is known to have potent therapeutic effects, therefore there is need for art in places of healing. Furthermore, engaging patients in the artistic process can have positive mental health benefits and help them to feel more connected with the hospital and broader community. Creating art encourages vision, hope and imagination, all of which nurture the healing process.

Henry Tsang[edit]
Henry Tsang is a visual and media artist whose work has been exhibited internationally. His projects incorporate digital media, video, photography, language and sculptural elements in the exploration of the relationship between the public, community and identity through global flows of people, culture and capital. Examples include video installations Orange County, 2004, and Olympus, 2006, shot in California, Beijing, Torino and Vancouver, demonstrating a complex understanding of overlapping urban and socio-political spaces; Napa North, 2008, exploring the relationship between wine, real estate and cultural translation in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley; and the Maraya project, with M. Simon Levin and Glen Lowry, that investigates the uncanny similarities between Vancouver’s False Creek and the Dubai Marina in the United Arab Emirates. His public artwork, Welcome to the Land of Light, is a 100 metre-long installation located on the seawall handrail along Vancouver’s False Creek. Comprised of fibre optic cable lighting and marine-grade aluminum lettering, it literally underscores Chinook Jargon, a 19th Century local trade language, and the English that replaced it, to speak about the promise of technology and how different cultures have come to live together in that part of the world.
