Situating us among Emily's extended Chinese Malaysian family, the film moves from big cities to tiny hamlets. Meanwhile, the birds, ever-present, act as a conduit between Emily and her family members, prompting conversations about family, home, and heritage. | |||

Born in Wuhan, raised in Vancouver, and currently living in Montreal, Sam is a student at McGill University pursuing a double major in Biology and English Literature. Along with many friends and helpers, he co-founded Yellow Noise Magazine in response to the dearth of Asian representation in the media. After having struggled against the model-minority myth all throughout high school, he discovered that there were actually many Asian people working on interesting artistic projects and much needed political activism. He decided to create a platform to shine a spotlight on those who are actively engaged in artistic and activist communities. He hopes that through this platform, young artists and activists of Asian descent can not only express themselves but also find role models who look like them and face the same struggles. | |||

Komachi Montréal est une troupe de danse folklorique japonaise spécialisée dans les danses Bon ou Bon Odori (danse pour la fête des morts selon les rites bouddhistes). Ce type de danse est pratiqué partout au Japon; surtout lors des Matsuri (festivals d’été). Komachi Montréal se spécialise dans les danses folkloriques de style Minyō. C’est un style qui exprime la joie de danser, de faire la fête ou se donner du courage pour travailler. Certaines danses sont touchantes tandis que d’autres sont humoristiques. Comme toutes danses folkloriques, les danses japonaises ont été transmises de génération en génération par la tradition orale. Ainsi, de nos jours, chaque ville ou région du Japon possède ses propres danses et chaque groupe de danse (Ren) interprète la danse à sa façon en y mettant sa touche personnelle. De par les enseignements de Mme Kayo Yasuhara, les danseurs apprennent des danses qui se transmettent depuis des siècles. Komachi Montréal tente de présenter des danses provenant des quatre coins du Japon afin de faire découvrir la grande diversité de la culture japonaise à son public. | |||

Born in Shiraz, Iran. After his arrival in Canada in 1988, along with contributions of his poetry and essays to local cultural/art journals, he pursued film studies and production, first at Ottawa’s Carleton University and later at Concordia University in Montreal. He has directed several award-winning short and feature films which have been screened in festivals, art galleries, and universities. From 1997 he worked on a trilogy: Nasoot (1997); Lahoot (1998); and Jabaroot(2003). The last part of the trilogy is a 60-minute poetic documentary on diasporic Iranian traditional music. His films have been selected by many prestigious international film festivals such as the Montreal World Film Festival, Hot Docs, Thessaloniki, and the Montreal International Festival of New Cinema.. Accomplished author Shahin Parhami is the mastermind behind all his work, producing his own films and responsible for all the creative elements (cinematography, Editing, Sound-design,…). | |||
In 2007 his film Faces, an experimental documentary premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival and won the best feature film award at the flEXiff 2007 (Sydney, Australia). His latest creative documentary, Amin, which tells the story of an ancient musical tradition and one musician's struggle to preserve it was funded by Asian Network of Documentary (AND), premiered at Pusan International Film Festival, South Korea, 2010, and won awards at Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival(Japan), Taiwan International Documentary Festival and Dubai International Film Festival. Amin was also nominated for best feature documentary at Asian Pacific Screen Awards 2011. | |||

Carolyn Fe has been an active performance artist in Montreal for over 25 years; from contemporary dancer, actress, theatre producer and now her latest project, Carolyn Fe Blues Collective – a Blues band with musicians from all corners of the world. Aside from being the lead singer/songwriter of the band, she oversees all the business aspects required to keep the band working and self-producing albums. To date two out of the three albums released have garnered industry acknowledgements and awards. The latest being an Achievement Award from the Filipino Community not only in the artistic realm but also as a role model in promoting a positive image of Filipino-Canadians. In all her artistic endeavours, Carolyn Fe combines her business savvy so that she can pay it forward to the causes and events that are close to her heart. | |||

Her latest creation is “Dancing For Change” a documentary film, a story about secular and socialist women of the Islamic world, their ideals, activism, and visions for a better world. It focuses on six Kurdish Iranian women from three different generations. These women live with their male comrades in a mountain camp where they organize and have been fighting the Iranian fundamentalist Government since the past 36 years. | |||
In a society where state and family violence against women is common, they are engaged in political and military training, writing, reading, broadcasting, dancing, and singing in order to make their voice heard against any kind of injustice. Most of these women have left their home and joined the Kurdish–Iranian underground organization, due to the extreme oppression they have been subjected to in the Islamic Republic of Iran. | |||
