NLHRO Inc. (Newfoundland and Labrador Headtax Redress Organization) is an incorporated body founded in 2007 by descendants of head tax payers, their families and supporters.
Mission Statement[edit]
Its mission is to promote an awareness of, and education on, the Newfoundland Head Tax (1906 - 1949), its impact on the Chinese-Newfoundland community, and the contributions of the pioneering Chinese immigrants who made the Dominion of Newfoundland their first home in Canada.
Besides the monument, NLHRO Inc. is working on three related projects to recognize the history and contributions of the Chinese in Newfoundland and Labrador:
- a digital exhibit/website where the pictures, stories and memories of the Chinese community will be shared;
- an exhibit depicting the experiences of the early Chinese immigrants, including their lives under the Newfoundland Chinese Head Tax (to be displayed at a suitable venue);
- an educational resource kit to be distributed to the public school boards in Newfoundland and Labrador.
