Contact: team@asiancanadianwiki.org

SHERWIN TJIA

SHERWIN TJIA is the author of 9 books. His collection of 1300 pseudohaikus, The World is a Heartbreaker, was a finalist for the Quebec Writers Federations's A.M. Klein Award. His graphic novel, The Hipless Boy, was a finalist for the Doug Wright Award and nominated for 4 Ignatz Awards. His latest book is the last of a trilogy of Choose Your Own Adventure style books from the POV of a cat, entitled You Are a Kitten!. In addition to his writing, he is also a multidisciplinary artist whose practise blurs the boundaries between performer and audience. Incorporating elements of childhood and nostalgia, Tjia's events create contexts that welcome participants to open and unsettle themselves, often in acts of radical intimacy or unexpected collaboration. He gently seduces participants into regressing and revealing themselves under the auspices of “having a good time”. He has toured these works nationally and internationally.

An Li, Vo Thien Viet, and Emily Yee Clare

Through strikes and rants, we have struggled together to digest and understand our identities. Always complicated, always confusing, we want to investigate who we are, and memory and its place within our communities. Although, we come from different places and perspectives, our narratives have woven together through love, activism, and friendship.

Intimacies bring us together, strengthen our will, and empower us to fight for our communities and our politics. We want to highlight the two sides of this: the internal care and love and the outward cry for justice. We are looking to recreate images of everyday community members to capture individual moments of solidarity, compassion and love throughout time.

Three humans. Who made art. Once upon a time. Out of love for their communities, and rage for those who fuck with us.

Description: Distant Intimacies is an evolving project centering racialised representation. Our presentation will discuss the challenge.

Margaret Elizabeth Nielsen

{{#widget:YouTube|id=-x32VfMkpwI}}

Born in Ellwangen, Germany, lives in Montréal, Canada.Photography as a mean of communication fascinated her since early adulthood. Influenced by classic photojournalism, she started to explore photography as an autodidact from scratch, working for years only in black and white. This allowed her to develop an experience in darkroom techniques as well as analog photography.

After having worked as a freelance photographer and assistant for many years, she started her career as a photo editor and account manager in a German photo agency. Various travels brought her to Asia and a sabbatical allowed her an extended stay in Afghanistan, where she could teach women basic photography. Her work about China has been exhibited with the support of the Goethe-Institut in Germany.

Her recent projects involve darkroom techniques as well as the reuse of found material. Her current project 'A Nepalese Photo Studio' is comprised of a selection of 'found photography' that she acquired from a family-run photo studio in Nepal. The images were taken by 2 photographers, father and son, who specialized in portraiture, street scenes, events and snippets from daily life. The material dates from the late 40s till the end of the 90s and provides insight into daily life and the history of a small Newari town and its inhabitants. The exhibition will be presented by Festival Accès Asie (www.accesasie.com) from April 27 to June 04, 2016 at La Maison de la Culture Frontenac, Montréal. www.margretnielsen.wordpress.com

Kiran Ambwani

Passionate about people, their lifestyle, and the arts, Kiran Ambwani is a professional photographer of Indian origin, now based in Montreal. Kiran's creative vision captivates the editorial and advertising worlds, with a versatile portfolio ranging from portraits to products, lifestyle to landscapes and architecture to abstract images. Kiran freelances for various publications, advertising and press agencies, and non-profit groups. Specializing in portraiture and editorial photography, Kiran's photographs have been published in Vogue, Geo Plein Air, MindFood (Australia), Travesias (Mexico), US Airways, IB World (UK), Le Devoir, Journal Alternatives, Metro, Mirror, and The Bombay Times (India). Kiran's images reflect a sensitivity shaped by her background in anthropology and environmental science and her numerous travels. Driven by a curiosity for the problematics encountered by marginalised populations, Kiran has explored, among others, the lives of Tibetan monks in exile, the survivors of child trafficking in Mumbai, the inhabitants of Asia's largest slum Dharavi, and the indigenous women of Nepal. She has collaborated on several humanitarian projects with NGOs in Canada, India, and Nepal. Apart from commercial work, Kiran has held several group and solo exhibitions of her personal work in Canada and abroad. Kiran is a graduate of McGill University and the Dawson Institute of Photography in Montreal.

Kiran is currently working on 'Objets Cheris'. A public art project, it aims at bringing art and life to the otherwise dull and impersonal walls of the oncology departments in Montreal's wellness facilities. Initiated at Montreal's Notre-Dame Hospital, this installation seeks to inspire people by showcasing patients who have found the inner strength to face the challenges of the disease by engaging in various hobbies and activities. Art is known to have potent therapeutic effects, therefore there is need for art in places of healing. Furthermore, engaging patients in the artistic process can have positive mental health benefits and help them to feel more connected with the hospital and broader community. Creating art encourages vision, hope and imagination, all of which nurture the healing process.
