About

Montreal Serai is a not-for-profit webzine focused on arts, culture, and politics. We began as a local theatre and arts collective that went on to produce a print magazine. Montreal Serai aims to stretch the margins with thoughtful essays, reviews, commentaries, short stories, poems, artwork, videos, music and much more. Neither strictly local, nor only current affairs, we hope to provide an alternative perspective that goes beyond mainstream concerns. We have had over 400 contributors from all over the world in our 26 year existence and an ever-increasing subscription base. Based in Montreal, Canada, Montreal Serai is recognized as a premier space in which both emerging and established writers and artists may engage.

Funding

Montreal Serai acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts which last year invested $20.0 million in writing and publishing throughout Canada.

Name Origin

Serai is a Persian word which means ‘resting place’ or a ‘place of transience’ for a traveler. Founded in 1986, Montreal Serai is an arts magazine that publishes fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and reviews of film, music, art, exhibitions, theater and dance.
