While completing his Ph.D. in English Literary Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he taught for over two years at in US prison, where he founded the Prison Writing Workshop. He teaches poetry at UBC, where he taught the first-ever Asian Canadian Creative Writing workshop. He is also former editor of Ricepaper magazine. He lectures widely on creativity, including a TEDxSFU talk on "How to Live a Creative Life."
