As the daughter of Cecille Estioko Hernandez, a pioneer of Filipino Folk Arts education in Canada, Catherine Hernandez (Collective Member/Performer/Artistic Director, Sulong Theatre) is dedicated to the development of the Filipino-Canadian artistic community. Her first play, Singkil, was produced by fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company in association with Factory Theatre and garnered seven Dora Mavor Moore nominations including Outstanding New Play, Independent Division. She is working/has worked in one capacity or another with Carlos Bulosan Theatre, Native Earth Performing Arts, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Aluna Theatre and numerous others. Her current projects include: Kilt Pins (her play to be produced by Sulong Theatre in May 2010), and Eating with Lola (her one-woman puppet play developed by fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company and the Kapisanan Centre for the Arts). She is a proud member of the modern tribal crew, Santa Guerrilla. She was Theatre Passe Muraille’s 08/09 playwright in residence and was the theatre’s Associate Producer for their 09/10 season. The creative wing of Sulong, the Sulong Theatre Collective are proud to be Carlos Bulosan Theatre’s 09/10 playwrights in residence.
