Founded in 1963, the Filipino Association of Montreal and Suburbs Inc. (FAMAS) started as a social club of Filipino professionals who came to Montreal to work as nurses, doctors and teachers. With the introduction of the Family Reunification Program in the 70s and the influx of Filipino contract workers in the 80s, the role of FAMAS evolved and the association took on a more significant and challenging role of assisting Filipino immigrants and contract workers integrate into their new environment and society. Its community center on Van Horne Avenue serves as a socio-civic, educational and cultural hub for some 30,000 Filipino-Canadians residing in the greater Montreal area.
