Founded in 2005 by Shawn Mativetsky, McGill Tabla Ensemble learns and performs traditional North Indian tabla compositions from the Benares baj (style). Students learn tabla techniques, repertoire, and performance practices, with the goal of developing advanced rhythm and improvisation skills, as well as an appreciation for North Indian classical music. Over the course of each semester, the group learns solo tabla repertoire, culminating in an Indian classical tabla soli performance. While most of the 30 members of the ensemble are music majors at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University, a number of students study in other faculties at McGill.
