The book examines several generations within Sammy's family, one of several who settled in British Columbia during the early part of the 20th century. Lee is a radio personality and also the writing columnist for CBC Radio One's On the Coast with Stephen Quinn. She writes a column called Westcoast Words. In the CBC's 2009 Canada Reads competition, she defended Brian Francis's novel Fruit.
