The current human rights situation in North Korea is dire. Millions suffer from hunger each day while millions more are estimated to have died from starvation over the last decade. North Koreans live with very few freedoms and rights. Many have no choice but to escape their country, take on the life of a defector and leave everything behind. Even at that point the possibility of freedom is not guaranteed. They decided to host Toronto’s first ever North Korean Human Rights Film Festival to tell the story of the people of North Korea through film. By holding this festival, they hope to raise awareness, create discussion and bring about change in hopes of contributing to a better situation for North Korea and its people.
